To see how the 2016 Honda CR-V stacks up against the Kia Sportage, continue reading below!

Standard Fuel Economy

If you are in the market for a compact crossover, then chances are you want a vehicle that is highly fuel-efficient. Well, crossover shoppers will be happy to hear the 2016 Honda CR-V compact crossover sips fuel with the best of them, thanks to its efficient powertrain. With an EPA-estimated 26 city/33 highway/29 combined mpg rating, the CR-V is miles ahead of Kia's Sportage when it comes to fuel economy. Honda's 2.4-liter engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which helps the CR-V achieve its astronomical fuel economy ratings. While the Kia Sportage is also equipped with a 2.4-liter engine, it isn't nearly as efficient, as it returns an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 21 city/28 highway/24 combined mpg. That is certainly a far cry from Honda's popular crossover; in fact, the CR-V bests the Sportage in fuel economy by a whopping five mpg! The most affordable models of both the Honda CR-V and the Kia Sportage are equipped with two-wheel drive (2WD), or more specifically, front-wheel drive (FWD). All-wheel drive systems are available on both crossovers, with the CR-V providing the better AWD performance and fuel economy; the fuel economy gap between the two is the same as in 2WD: the CR-V bests the Sportage by an average of five mpg. It is hard to believe these similarly sized crossovers that both feature engines with a displacement of 2.4-liters can have such drastically different fuel efficiency, but that just goes to show why Honda is one of the leaders in fuel-efficient vehicles in America.

Standard Power

With the Honda CR-V being much more fuel-efficient than the Kia Sportage, you may expect the Kia to have more power on tap, but that isn't the case. In fact, these two small crossovers offer similar output, with the CR-V providing a bit more horsepower and torque than the Sportage. Why settle for less power and worse fuel economy when you can have the best of both worlds in the Honda CR-V compact crossover?

Passenger Space

With the seating space similar to a mid-size sedan and a large, versatile cargo area behind the rear seats, it is no wonder that compact crossovers have become so popular in recent years. Of course, Honda's CR-V is one of the original compact crossovers, so it should come as no surprise that it is still one of the leaders in the segment. The 2016 CR-V provides over four more cubic feet of passenger volume than its rival from Kia. That additional passenger space can be felt throughout the cabin, as the CR-V offers more front and second-row headroom, shoulder room, and hip room. Front legroom is nearly identical in these two compact crossovers, but the CR-V once again tops the Sportage, this time in rear legroom. When shopping for a compact crossover, why not choose the one that is more spacious and versatile?

Cargo Capacity

Compact crossovers are all about versatility, and in this comparison, the 2016 Honda CR-V offers not only more space for occupants, but also more cargo-hauling ability than the Kia Sportage. Standard cargo capacity, or the space available when the second row of seats is in the upright position, in the 2016 CR-V is an impressive 37.2 cubic feet, compared to a mere 26.1 in the 2016 Sportage. When the second row of seating is folded down, thanks to the CR-V's 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks, cargo space in the CR-V balloons to an incredible 70.9 cubic feet; in the Sportage, you will find a maximum cargo capacity of just 54.6 cubic feet. As you can see, Honda's 2016 CR-V provides significantly more cargo capacity than the Kia, whether the seats are up or down. For more versatility and space for both passengers and cargo, choose the 2016 Honda CR-V.

Standard Features

Compact crossovers have a reputation for offering great value, but some are better equipped than others. Take the 2016 CR-V; Honda's popular small crossover comes standard with an impressive list of features, many of which are not available on the Kia Sportage base model. For instance, Honda's innovative Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Guidelines is standard equipment on the 2016 CR-V, but Kia does not even offer a basic rearview camera as standard on the Sportage. The Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Guidelines on the CR-V provides drivers with a better view of what is behind, thanks to its three different angles: normal, top-down, and wide. You also won't find the CR-V's standard convenience features like automatic headlights with auto-off function, an anti-theft stereo, and floor mats on the 2016 Sportage: they are optional on the Kia. Here's a brief list of some of the standard features on the Honda CR-V:

Safety Ratings

While both the 2016 Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage are safe SUVs, as evident by their NHTSA crash test ratings, Honda's CR-V edges out the Kia as the safer option. The NHTSA awarded both compact crossovers with its 5-Star Overall Rating, but the CR-V performed better across the board. Where the CR-V scored a perfect 5-Star rating on the NHTSA's Front Passenger Crash Test, the Sportage faltered with just a 4-Star rating.
